Historic Battlefields Threatened by Progress

The sounds of our past echoed throughout Lenoir County Friday morning, but those sounds may fade away due to development.

1,800 students packed open fields in Kinston Friday that were once historic battlefields during the Civil War.

It was part of a reenactment weekend, which kicked off Friday morning. However, Lenoir County's Wyse Fork battlefield, site of the second largest Civil War battle in the state, could get smaller.

Developers want to run part of a bypass through the land. But preservationists think you can still have economic development by using the historic fields as an attraction.

Re-enactors will perform the battle at their site on Saturday and Sunday.
