The Marine Corps' first operational MV-22 Osprey Squadron was activated in a ceremony aboard New River Air Station Friday.
Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 263 is now designated as Marine Medium Tilt rotor Squadron 263. The MV-22 is scheduled to replace the Marine Corps' fleet of aging CH46E's, which have been in use for more than 40 years.
Several Marines have lost their lives in Osprey crashes related to failed design plans. The Commanding General of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at New River Air Station says the new design proves the lives of Marines lost in previous accidents on the Osprey are not in vain.
