Pages of charred photographs, piles of bricks and burnt pilings is all that remains of Free Grace Weslyan Church on Harkers Island.

The 70 year old church was struck by lightning Sunday morning and destroyed. Although the church had a lightning rod, mother nature's wrath was too much. Luckily, the newly built sanctuary was spared, thanks to a fire wall. A door leading to the old church now reads "Thru the Fire." The pastor says, he and his 100 parishioners are operating on those three words now.

The church will hold service this Sunday at the new sanctuary. Parishioners will spend this week cleaning up any leftover soot, smoke and water damage, that made it past the firewall.
