Protecting History Under the Sea

An underwater sand dune will be built out in Beaufort inlet to protect the site of what may be Black Beard's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge.

Scientists say much of the sand that protects the site has washed away, leaving it vulnerable to future storm damage.

The project, which started Wednesday, involves building that dune about 400 feet from the wreck to deflect damaging waves.

Experts say about 30,000 cubic feet of sand will be used for the project.
