As you file your income taxes, if you're a pet owner you might notice a little extra that you may owe thanks to your furry friend.
At the Edgecombe County Animal Shelter, dogs are not only in need of a permanent home, but also money to help with the upkeep of their temporary one, and that comes at a cost to every pet owner across the county. County Manager Lorenzo Carmen says pet owners are required to register their dog or cat, and pay a five dollar property tax every year, which could be compounded by a city tax depending on where they live. If a pet owner doesn't register their animal, they could pay more later on down the road if the pet gets lost.
Edgecombe County is not alone. Nash, Wilson, and several other counties also charge pet owners fees that fund their local animal shelter.
