ECU Hires New Jersey State Police Major As New Top Cop

A veteran lawmen in New Jersey will soon become ECU's new police chief.

The university announced this morning that Gerald Lewis will take over the department on January 21st.

Lewis is a major with the New Jersey State Police, and will retire next month after 26 years, according to a news release.

The 50-year-old headed their Community Affairs Office, and is credited with strenghtening ties between the state police and the public after racial profiling was found in some of the officers traffic stops.

"My first goal is to create the safest environment possible for students, staff and everyone in the ECU community," Lewis said.

Lewis was selected after a nationwide search and will replace Scott Shelton, who retired this spring.
