The North Carolina Department of Transportation said Wednesday one contractor was fired after an investigating linked that worker to a handful of inappropriate traffic alert messages.
In a release from the NCDOT, officials said six "erroneous and inappropriate traffic alert messages" went out over the department's traveler information management system, also known as TIMS.
Investigators said they linked the messages to a contractor who had been hired six months before the incident. That contractor was said to have been conducting routine testing on the TIMS, but violated procedure by not turning off the external feed.
Officials with the NCDOT have not elaborated on the content of those messages nor released the contractor's name, saying only that the worker's contract was terminated.
