It's a disturbing story, and it's impact is reaching right here to Eastern Carolina. A company called Biomedical Tissue Services is accused of improperly taking tissue and bone from dead people without their families permission. Federal officials are investigating.
And now it turns out six patients at Pitt County Memorial Hospital received tissue from third party vendors who did business with Biomedical Tissue Services. The hospital stresses that all tissue was sterilized and screened to federal standards, but the hospital is also doing more. Hospital officials say quote, "The six patients identified who received these tissues have been notified, and PCMH is working with their physicians to address all questions and concerns, including offering free testing to allay concerns about their health.
