The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office says U.S. Marshals were in the Conetoe area Friday for a manhunt for 38-year-old Christopher Powell. He is wanted on federal charges for violating probation on gun and drug charges.

Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight says Powell was spotted Friday about 1:00p.m. on Factory Street in Conetoe, and deputies and U.S. Marshals set up a perimeter in the area. Deputies asked people to stay in their homes during the search. Deputies and Marshals thought they located Powell a couple of hours later, but he was still not in custody as of late Friday night.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office first alerted the U.S. Marshals about Powell last month after they identified him as a suspect in a break in at the Conetoe Volunteer Fire Department September 23rd. About $50,000 worth of equipment was stolen during that break-in. No one was at the department at the time.
