Opponents to the Navy's proposed Outlying Landing Field in Washington County say the thousands and thousands of waterfowl nearby could pose a real concern for pilots. Tuesday, environmentalists led a tour of the nearby Pocosin National Wildlife Refuge, home this time of the year to More than 100,000 swans, geese, and other large waterfowl. Environmentalists believe the jets would have a detrimental impact on the wildlife, while facing a risk from the birds as well. The Navy continues to put together an additional environmental impact statement on the Washington site, as well as three other possible locations.
