Four years ahead of schedule, the first phase of the Highway 17 Bypass was announced Friday by Governor Mike Easley. The $192,000,000 project has been awarded to two out-of-state companies to build the six-point-eight mile, four lane bypass. Phase one will begin South of Price Road, and connect North of Springs Road in Beaufort County, including a two-point seven mile bridge crossing the Tar and Pamlico Rivers. Work on phase two of the Washington Bypass may begin in 2007 from Possum Track Road to Price Road.
