Keeping the Environment Clean

The blame for waste water runoff often lands on the doorsteps of North Carolina farmers. Now, there is a training class all farmers must take to help keep the environment clean.

Eve Honeycutt with the Lenoir County Extension Office says the waste management class is a way to make sure that all livestock producers understand how to properly apply wastes.

Bill Perry with the Cherry Research Farm says this also teaches farmers how to be good stewards of the land. He says, "Being aware that you do live in neighborhoods or you do have neighbors and the fact that what you do on your farm may affect them adversely from runoff, from odors."

Farmers who complete this course receive their mandatory certification which they must renew every three years.
