Doctors said he wasn't supposed to survive, but he did. It's his will to live that has earned him national recognition. 12-year-old Derek Gaskins is the new North Carolina Children's Miracle Network Ambassador. Nearly two years ago, he was accidentally shot with a shotgun. Derek almost died. But today, he's fully recovered and is an inspiration to kids all around the area. Derek was nominated by Pitt County's Children's Hospital and went up against a child from both Duke and Charlotte. This is the second year in a row the Children's Miracle Network Ambassador has come from University Health System's Children's Hospital.
