Former Washington County Sheriff Stanley James took the stand in his own defense Thursday. He didn't have anything to say outside the courthouse. But on the stand, James testified that a statement taken by the State Bureau of Investigation was inaccurate. James says he never told the agent he intentionally hid the existence of the check in question because of an upcoming sheriff's election. James also testified a series of transfers between his personal bank account and one belonging to the Washington County Law Enforcement Association were reimbursements for purchasing items for the sheriff's office.
