Surveillance Video Released In Walgreens ATM Heists

More Video...

Police today released surveillance video from one of two “smash and grabs” ATMs that happened late last week in Pitt County.

The two burglaries happened late Thursday night and early Friday morning at two Walgreens, about an hour apart.

The first one hit was the Walgreens at Greenville Boulevard and Evans Streets, while less than an hour later the same thing happened at the Winterville location on Highway 11 at Fire Tower Road.

Police now say more than $14,000 in cash was taken in the Winterville heist, while more than $12,000 taken from the Greenville location.

In the surveillance video from the Winterville location, the whole thing took 30 seconds as crooks break in, put a tow strap around the teller machine and pull it out with a stolen pickup truck.

Greenville police Friday afternoon announced they had warrants out for 32-year-old Christopher Hoover of Okeechobee, Florida.

He is wanted for breaking and entering, larceny, felony safecracking and possession of a stolen weapon.

Police believe two more people were involved in the thefts.

Both empty ATMs were recovered by police.

A Florida man is wanted for at least one of the two ATM thefts from Pitt County Walgreens last night.

Greenville police say they have warrants out for 32-year-old Christopher Hoover of Okeechobee, Florida.

He is wanted for breaking and entering, larceny, felony safecracking and possession of a stolen weapon.

The Greenville Boulevard at Evans Street pharmacy was the first one hit around 11:45 p.m. In that case officers found the front door of the business smashed, and the ATM pulled into the parking lot and emptied.

Police say evidence suggests at least three people were involved.

Less than an hour later the Winterville Walgreens, at Highway 11 and Fire Tower Road, was also hit.

Greenville police say their investigation led them to the Roadway Inn on Greenville Boulevard where they located the Ford pickup truck believed used in the heists. It was reported stolen in Hoover's hometown in Florida.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Hoover should call police at 252-329-4315 or CrimeStoppers at 252-758-7777.

Police say Hoover has an extensive criminal history in Florida and should be considered dangerous.

Previous Story

Greenville police say it appears the theft of ATMs at two Pitt County Walgreens are connected.

In both cases two white men broke the glass front doors of the pharmacies and made off with the cash machines.

A police report says the crooks used a sledgehammer, chain cutters, several crowbars and tow straps.

A manager of one of the stores says surveillance video shows in both cases the crooks backing up to the front doors in a pickup truck, prying open the doors, tossing a rope around the ATMs and pulling them out of the buildings with the trucks.

The whole thing took between 30 and 45 second.

The first case was discovered at the Walgreens at the corner of Greenville Boulevard and Evans Street around 11:45 p.m.

Less than an hour later the Walgreens at Highway 11 and Fire Tower Road in Winterville had the same thing happen.

Winterville police say there is surveillance video of their burglary, but police haven't released that yet.

Both businesses were closed at the time.

Greenville and Winterville police say they are working together on this investigation, but so far no arrests have been made.

A Greenville police report says the pickup truck used in their heist--a 2006 burgundy tan Ford F350--was recovered. A police department spokesman says he doesn't know if it was stolen or not.
