Sonar May Be To Blame For Whale Beachings

A preliminary government report shows a possible link between the Navy's use of sonar and why dozens of whales beached themselves along the Outer Banks a year ago. That report, along with a second report by the National Marine Fisheries Service, found many of the same injuries to the whales. Scientists have linked sonar use to fatal whale beachings but are still studying its effects. The Navy plans to build an underwater sonar training range off the coast near Camp Lejeune. Environmentalists say more needs to be known about the impact of sonar before the Navy builds the range.
