The U.S. Navy still wants its outlying landing field to be in Washington County, but it's conducting tests now on land in Hyde County. The Navy has temporarily condemned about 11,000 acres of land in Hyde County, as it continues working on a supplemental environmental impact study ordered by the courts. The Navy will do the same for possible sites in Bertie, Craven, and Perquimans counties. Residents aren't happy. Navy officials say that land owners in Hyde County would not allow them on their property, so they turned to the courts.
