Freedom of speech. Is it being violated at our state universities? According to the Pope Center for Higher Education Policy and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, thirteen out of sixteen universities in the public system have at least one policy that restricts students’ freedom of speech. That includes East Carolina University and Elizabeth City State University.
ECU officials have made it clear they understand how important this issue is. ECU Assistant Vice Chancellor Corey King says, "We received a copy of the report and we're moving ahead and this really gives us an even greater jump start in redeveloping our policies that fall in with the first amendment rights and that people feel are more conducive with free speech policies on campus."
