The Highway Patrol says a man who suffered from congestive heart failure likely suffered a "medical event" that caused him to drive off the road and into his neighbor's house.
Troopers say 78-year-old Richard Fordham of Lenoir County was found dead at the scene of where his pickup truck hit a mobile home on Grainger Station Rd., north of Kinston. Troopers responded to the crash site at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
While the medical examiner will need to confirm it, troopers believe it wasn't the impact of the crash that killed Fordham. Officials believe he died while behind the wheel before hitting the house just down the road from where he lived.
Fordham's son said the man suffered from congestive heart failure, according to the Highway Patrol.
Damage to the mobile home was described as minimal, and the homeowner was not injured.
