East Carolina University says it's taking steps because of the water contamination.

ECU has posted "don't drink" signs on water fountains throughout the campus. The university says dining halls will remain open using paper and plastic plates and utensils, food will only be prepared that doesn't require rinsing and employees will use hand sanitizers.

The university says all food and beverages prepared prior to the water contamination alert have been thrown away and signs have been posted at all possible water sources alerting students and employees not to drink the water.

East Carolina athletics says it is providing water and ice to athletes from a source outside Greenville Utilities service area.

More than likely summer school students only have 1 class on campus a day that lasts 2 hours. Also, people are living on campus. If they can live on campus with this situation then you can sure as heck go to class.

Dave: There is no safety issue on campus; use bottled water & purell. Who is paying for your education? Would you walk-in to Best-Buy, pay $3K for a t.v., and not walk out w/ the product? Someone (you?) are paying for those classes. You are in college, it is NOT compulsary. I agree w/ Jason, grow-up. University should not be like elementary school where you fold your hands and pray for snow.

Cancel classes? ECU's fault? Failed to alert? You sound like immature, disgruntled individuals looking for some kind of an out for personal convictions. Grow up. e-coli happens. Get over it. Go to the source with concerns. That would be the GUC.

I am a student at ECU and I am deeply irritated that the higher ups at the college did not cancel classes for today and tomorrow! Once again ECU drops the ball.

ECU failed when it comes to alerting. There is an entire messaging alert system set up for these things on campus and my cell phone received no text. It took an hour after I heard about the problem, and I work at ECU, for ECU to send out an email announcement about the water.

I just paid my water bill and they were saying that we should boil our water at least until tomorrow. They were testiing and came up with some problems. Have you heard anything?
