Camp Lejeune Marine Faces Additional Sex Crime Charges

Jacksonville police have charged 21-year-old Curtis Ray Gates, Jr. of Jacksonville with seven additional charges stemming from four incidents that occurred between February 2 through July 9 of this year.

Warrants were served Tuesday on Gates at the Onslow County Jail for 2 counts of sexual battery, attempted 2nd degree rape, assault on a female, 2nd degree sexual offense, crime against nature, and felony breaking and entering.

Gates is being held under $1 million secured bond.That bond stems from a July 14th sexual assault that happened in the parking area of the Northwoods Shopping Center, according to police.

Captain Jason Bettis said a joint investigation with NCIS provided evidence to charge Gates in four other open investigations of sexual assault in the city.


A Camp Lejeune Marine remains behind bars after police say they caught him engaged in a sexual assault.

21-year-old Corporal Curtis Gates, Jr. of Lakewood Drive in Jacksonville has been charged with 2nd degree sexual offense, first degree kidnapping, and crime against nature.

Jacksonville police say that they responded around 1 a.m. Sunday to a report of a disturbance in the parking area of the Northwoods Shopping Center. When officers arrived they say they found a sexual assault in progress.

Gates was taken into custody without incident, according to investigators.

Gates' attorney appeared for him during a first appearance Monday morning and a judge kept his bond at $1,000,000.

Jacksonville Police Investigative Services and NCIS Sexual Assault Task Force are investigating.

Camp Lejeune says Gates is a motor-T mechanic assigned to II MEF Headquarters Group. He joined the Marine Corps in September 2011.
