Coast Guard Suspends Search After Body Sighted In Bogue Sound

The U.S. Coast Guard says it has suspended its search in the Bogue Sound after two vacationers said they spotted a body.

The Coast Guard says it searched until 10:00 p.m. Sunday night, but found no signs of a body.

Carteret County Major Jason Wank says that two vacationers from Greenville that were on jet ski's reported seeing the body near the Salty Shores Campground in Broad Creek around 1 p.m. Sunday.

He said no one has been reported missing and no additional sightings of a possible body have been reported.

Wank says the North Carolina Marine Patrol conducted another search of the area by boat this morning and nothing was found.

The Carteret County Sheriff's Office says that the search continues for a body said to have been spotted in the Bogue Sound.

Major Jason Wank says that two vacationers from Greenville that were on jet ski's reported seeing the body near the Salty Shores Campground in Broad Creek around 1 p.m.

As of 7:20, search efforts involving Carteret County deputies, the NC Highway Patrol, NC Marine Fisheries, Wildlife, Atlantic Beach Police and the US Coast Guard continue.

Officials say that Carteret County Emergency Communications Center has not received any missing person reports.

Several agencies are searching for a body following a reported sighting by 2 jet skiers.

A duty officer with the NC Coast Guard says they got the call for assistance around 1:11 this afternoon in the Bogue Sound, specifically the Broad Creek area off of Highway 24 in Carteret County.

Officials say they launched a Coast Guard boat from Emerald Isle to assist the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office marine patrol, and the Atlantic Beach Police Department. The duty officer says that a scene coordinator requested a helicopter from highway patrol to assist as well.

The Coast Guard says that they have received no reports of any missing people.

We’re awaiting a call back from the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office for more information on their end of the search.
