The state's gas tax is at its highest ever. Jan. 1 the state's gas tax went up another 2.8 cents per gallon, giving North Carolina the sixth highest gasoline tax in the nation.
According to AAA Carolinas, for each gallon you buy you're now paying 48.3 cents per gallon just in state and federal taxes. State lawmakers may call a special session to deal with high energy costs, including possibly rolling back the gasoline tax.
