Former Congressman Frank Ballance Behind Bars

Former Congressman Frank Ballance reported to authorities at the federal prison in Butner just after 10 a.m. Friday to start serving a four-year stint for siphoning taxpayer money from a nonprofit he created to help drug abusers.

Ballance funneled more than $100,000 to his family, law firm and church.

During his nearly two decades in the General Assembly, Ballance steered more than two million dollars in state money to the John Hyman Memorial Foundation.

Ballance's son, former state district court judge Garey Ballance, was sentenced to nine months in federal prison for failing to declare the taxable gift of money his father gave him. He's scheduled to begin serving his sentence next month.
