Police say a foreign exchange student who had only been in America for three weeks died while swimming off the Crystal Coast Thursday.
Emerald Isle police say Marcel Albu was pulled from the 8600 block of Ocean View Drive around 11:20 a.m. Thursday by beachgoers.
The 18-year-old was from Moldova, which is in Eastern Europe.
Police say the victim was initially seen floating in the water by several people who thought he was snorkeling.
At first police did not know who the drowning victim was. But later in the afternoon his roommates reported the teen missing and a positive I.D. was made.
Police worked through the night with the U.S. State Department and the Moldova Embassy in Washington to notify his family.

After seeing the victim being rolled in the surf and he wasn't swimming they pulled him from the water.
The victim was taken to Carteret General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police say they do not yet know the identity of the victim. Witnesses tell WITN News that the victim appeared to be a young man in his 20s.
This is the second drowning in Carteret County waters so far this month. On June 1st, an East Carolina University student died at Pine Knoll Shores after being caught up in a rip current.
