Fire on Outer Banks Injures Two and Kills Pets

It was a real life nightmare before Christmas for one Outer Banks family.

A home on Highway 12 was left in ruin by an early morning fire Friday which sent those inside to the hospital for burns. The names of the residents have not been released, but it appears the two victims were getting ready for the holidays.

Kill Devil Hills fire chief Doug Penland says the family's Christmas tree caught fire and went up in flames. When the residents of the home tried to extinguish the fire, the blaze got out of control.

Remains of several pets were found inside the home once the fire was extinguished. The house is a total loss.
