Changes In Store For Nags Head Volunteer Fire Department

Changes are on the way for Nags Head's oldest firefighting unit, as the town looks to cut costs. Earlier this month, the town's board voted to end the current contract with the Nags Head volunteer fire department, effective December 2006.

The volunteer firemen have already relocated to new headquarters. After the contract expires, the town will adopt a new policy to guideline the working relationship with Nag's Head's volunteer firefighters, who are currently reimbursed based on experience and time. Officials say the old station may be used to house ocean rescue personnel after the new station opens up early next year.
