They won't close, at least not right now. Friday, a Bertie County schools spokesperson told WITN-7 the school board has rescinded its decision to close three elementary schools in the county, Askewville, Aulander, and J.P. Law.
Now the school board has instructed its attorney to develop a new desegregation plan as part of a lawsuit between the school system and the U.S. Department of Justice.
One possible option in the new proposal is to close J.P. Law and Askewville Elementary Schools at the end of the 2006-2007 school year.
Then there's option number two. If funds become available by 2007, close Aulander, Askewville and J.P. Law and build a new school for 450 students that would open in 2009.
