Three people, two of them children, are sick with shigellosis in Carteret County. Shigellosis is a bacterial infection that causes diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. While most people recover in five to seven days, young children and the elderly can get so seriously ill they need to be hospitalized. The illness is quickly and easily transmitted, so the Carteret County health department is working hard to get the word out about this infection. Officials say proper and frequent hand washing is the key to preventing the spread of this illness.
