WASHINGTON (AP) -- Michelle Obama said she was "touched" that first lady Laura Bush came to her defense after she was harshly criticized by Republicans for saying last February that for the first time in her adult life she was proud of the United States.

Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, later clarified her remarks, saying she had always been proud of her country and was particularly proud to see so many people involved in the political process.

In an interview last week with ABC, Bush said, "I think she probably meant 'I'm more proud,' you know, is what she really meant." She said comments in a campaign are closely watched and can be misconstrued.

Michelle Obama told the women of ABC's "The View" that she sent Bush a note for her remarks.

"It took me a while to write it. It's like, how do I address her?" she said. "I said dear madam first lady."

Obama did not elaborate on the contents of the letter because she said Bush might not have received it yet.

"But I was touched by it," Michelle Obama said. "And that's what I like about Laura Bush. You know, just calm, rational approach to these issues. And you know, I'm taking some cues. I mean, there's a balance. There's a reason why people like her. It's because she doesn't, sort of, you know, fuel the fire."

At a campaign stop in February, Michelle Obama told an audience in Milwaukee: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change."

Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential contender John McCain, later sought to capitalize on the remark, saying "I have, and always will be, proud of my country."

Obama, guest host on the popular talk show, talked about the presidential campaign and helped interview actor Matthew Broderick.

Anonymous- It seems that not everyone can take a joke, especially when it is about their candidate. Freedom of speech is wonderful, isn't it?

I agree with Brad. It's not the country that's fouled up. It's the leadership. I won't vote for either McCain or Obama (Barack, not Michelle)because both are part of this spineless Congress tha, unfortunately, we put in there. I'll stick to Ralph Nader or Bob Barr.

That's a real mature statement Tim.

Question- Is Osama, er, I mean Obama grooming himself for the top job, or High Holy Princess Michelle?

Statements are words people use to express what they believe and think. The obamas, their associates, and spiritual leaders have made statements that are antiAmerican, antiwhite, and unpatriotic (IMO). Yet when these statements tend to cause them negative publicity they explain how everyone has misunderstood them. Hogwash!! And I've also noticed on this site that when people are presented cold, hard facts they can't defend or explain, they tend to attack and try to discredit the other side, out of desperation or anger. I'm not for McCain but whenever I see his wife in the media she just stands behind her husband and says nothing. Do you people know her personally? I've always been proud of my country. I'm not proud of the idiots that are in charge and making decisions, but I am proud of my country. For those of you who are not, try living in Iran, Irag, Vietnam, Korea or a similar country. I will gladly buy you a one way ticket to go there. Vote American, not obama.

People need to get over the "proud of my country" thing. It was a statement for gosh sakes. There have been many, many times I have NOT been proud of this country. Haven't been proud much at all for the last eight years! Hopefully thats about to change. Obama 08

See Though The Wool - You are so right. She seems like someone you could just go up to and talk, fun and very smart. Cindy McCain is so cold, stuck up and like you said fake.

"I have, and always will be, proud of my country." Oh yeah, no matter what huh? Torture? Slavery? Pillage and Oppression of Native Americans? Proud of those parts too? I love my Country, don't get me wrong. But some people act like America is perfect, like there are no and/or never were any flaws. Please, wake up. This Country is not without stains, big blotched blood stains at that. I live here, I love here, I will defend here, but lets not get carried away. "To admit error in one self is pure loveliness, but you break the mirror that reminds you of your ugliness." Get off her back, she's being real, speaking like an ordinary person. The other lady is being fake, speaking like a politician.

Once again editor you refuse to post FACTS. Fact: In 1996 obama filled out a questionaire. One of the questions asked about banning handguns. He indicated he was for a ban. Fact: His wife stated on PUBLIC MEDIA that they want to take some individual's "piece of their pie" and redistribute it to others. Fact:His wife stated on PUBLIC MEDIA "for the first time in my life I am proud to be an American". Fact:obama just recently stated on PUBLIC MEDIA that he wants to increase taxes on the top 3% of the wealthiest (punishing achievement). Since you refuse to post facts, I can think of only 2 reasons you would do this:1) You are nothing more than a hypocrit using your position to filter what YOU want people to see or 2)you are extremely ignorant of the facts and do not deserve the position you have.

I saw her on The View this morning and was very impressed with her. I think shes great. I don't pay alot of attention the what the media throws out there, or stuff the GOP tries to dig up. I also read the polls favor her over Cindy McCain right now. Maybe America is tired of the spoiled rich blond types. I'm white and spoiled also, and board with myself I guess. I'm ready for change in America. The Obamas have my vote.

I find it strange how we all misunderstand them!!! I don't believe a person can sit in a church for 20 years and not understand what the message was. If you are that dumb, you sure don't want that person for president!!!!!

Im not sure how that comment can be misconstrued! She knew what she was saying and obviously she meant every word of it or she wouldn't have said it! Sounds great from the one that everyone wants to become our next first lady!! Unbelieveable!!

Time and time again when an unpopular stance, belief, or statement seems to be hurting their popularity, 1)that statement was misunderstood, 2)a statement is retracted, 3)that issue is not relevant or important, etc... If you quack like a duck, swim like a duck, smell like a duck, and look like a duck; you're a duck.

She should say what she means and mean what you says and I belive she did.

She( Obama) is not classy enough for the white house

Laura Bush is indeed a lady, not just the First Lady. That is why it is not surprising to hear her make a positive comment.

Maybe Mrs. Bush needs her ears cleaned out. The things that Mrs. Obama says are very prominent not only in quasi-racist in her statements but even more clear in her actions.

Maybe Michelle Obama should run for prez instead of her hubby.
