Arson on the Rise in Dare County

Arson is on the rise along our coast. This year Dare County suffered $8 million in losses to suspicious or malicious fires. Better than 30 percent of 2005's fires in Dare County were set, like the Pirates Cove Marina blaze in February that destroyed several charter boats, and caused a huge fuel spill.

In March, a teenager was charged with lighting up a Manteo church. Dare County Fire Marshal Doug Remaley says over half of Dare County's suspected arsons involved teenagers, seven percent were ten-years old or younger. Mental health and fire officials have a counseling plan in place to help deal with the problem.

There are roughly forty cases of unsolved fires in Dare County.
