An ultralight aircraft with two people aboard had to make an unplanned landing on the soundside of the Neuse River, right off Johnson Point Road in Craven County shortly before three Friday afternoon. Authorities we spoke with say the pilot, Ron Smith of New Bern, noticed engine problems with his aircraft and decided he needed to land quickly. The Coast Guard and Craven County Highway Patrol responded to the scene. Both people aboard appeared to be fine and refused medical attention. It was just last week a single engine Cessna went down into the Neuse River narrowly missing the Highway 70 bridge.
