The Highway Patrol now says there were 21 different accidents on the Neuse River Bridge in Craven County last night with 35 vehicles involved.
Icy conditions on the high-rise four-lane span started around 5:30 p.m. Friday night. Sgt. Tim Wells says troopers shut down the bridge until the D.O.T. could treat the span. It reopened to traffic around five hours later.
Wells says no one died in any of the crashes, but there were multiple injuries. Three different troopers were handling the crash reports.
As for Saturday, Sgt. Wells says the bridge remains open, but motorists should still use some caution and watch their speed.
20 wrecks which happened at virtually the same time on the icy Neuse Bridge Friday night about 5:30 p.m. shut down the bridge in and out of New Bern for several hours according to Sgt. Tim Wells with the Highway Patrol. It reopened about 10:30 p.m.
Sgt Wells says 35 vehicles were involved and there were injuries, but he doesn't know how many or how serious. He says the crashes weren't necessarily chain reaction events, but they basically all happened at the same time as drivers tried to avoid other vehicles on the icy bridge.
