People escaped a house fire in the Pitt County town of Farmville that started around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

The fire broke out at 4273 Belcher St. in Farmville. Fire officials tell WITN that the fire started in the back of the house, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Crews stayed on the scene for a few hours to make sure there were no hot spots burning in the attic.

The house actually contained two apartments. One woman who lives in the front part of the house with three others, including a child, says they all escaped without injuries. She says when they heard the
smoke alarm, and then saw smoke, they knew it was time to get out.

This is a very upsetting story and really touch close to home. The couple that were living in this house are good friends of mine. The husband is a local fire chief and he was helping fight the wildfire in Hyde county when his house caught fire. Luckily his wife and 1 yr son were able to escape. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers as they try to adjust to the shock and get back on their feet and rebuild their lives. What a tragedy for anyone to loose their home! Please lets pull together and help this local hero during this difficult time. If you would like to help donate items to this family please respond to the comment and I will make sure they get them. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you and God Bless.

"She says when they heard the smoke alarm, and then saw smoke, they knew it was time to get out." Seriously? Is that what you're supposed to do?!?
