Pulled from a hat... That's how one election was decided in Pamlico County to break a tie for a town commissioner seat in Mesic. Pamlico County Board of Election officials in Bayboro decided the race between incumbent Mahue Smith and challenger Joe Ollison. After a canvas count, a recount of all ballots including absentee, one-stop, and provisional ballots, both candidates tied with 45 votes a piece. The county's Director of Elections says pulling the name out of a hat to settle the tie is perfectly legal. By the way, the official winner of that race is the incumbent Mahue Smith.
