Several Problems Cited at Washington County Jail

Since the Washington County jail break last month, where two inmates climbed out of a third story window, the county has been told the aging facility has multiple problems that must be fixed. County Manager David Peoples says the state jail inspector examined the jail just after the escape and informed the county of six problems ranging from securing the window that was broken during the escape to fire protection. As a result, the county manager says the state has taken away all the federal inmates housed at the jail, which provides roughly $250,000 a year for the county. One solution the county is looking at is building a new jail, but that could cost up to $6 million and the county manager isn't sure they can afford it. The county says they are close to fixing each one of the problems listed, and they hope federal inmates can return in the next 45 days.
