NAACP Membership

The new leaders of the state N-Double-A-C-P have unveiled a campaign to increase membership by ten percent in North Carolina. New chapter president Reverend William Barber of Goldsboro says the membership drive will start November 13th with a rally at Bennett College, the historically black women's college in Greensboro. The drive will continue until the group's annual meeting in February. Barber beat incumbent Melvin L. "Skip" Alston of Greensboro in October. Barber said he would push decision-making power to the local chapters and committees and would not sacrifice principles for politics. He also promised to use the courts and the streets on issues such as opposition to payday lending to the passage of "living wage" legislation.
