Possibility Of More Parole

A new state law will make it easier for some inmates to get out of prison. The State Parole Commission will be allowed to parole at least twenty-percent of eligible inmates who were sent to prison before the structured sentencing act of 1994. The act takes away parole and gives a more specific time that an inmate must remain in prison. Some lawmakers say the new law is supposed to help with prison overcrowding which in turn helps trim the state budget.
Everyone convicted in North Carolina since 1994 is under stricter sentencing guidelines which requires inmates to serve at least a minimum term.
