It was perhaps Jacksonville’s darkest hour 22-years ago Sunday. A terrorist bombing at a Marine barracks in Beirut that left 241 Marines dead. Sunday afternoon, hundreds gathered at Jacksonville’s Beirut Memorial as the Marine Commandant, General Michael Hagee, laid a wreath honoring those killed in the 1983 bombing. This was the 19th time since the Beirut Memorial was completed that Jacksonville’s military and civilian communities have honored the 273 local troops killed in Beirut, and in Grenada in 1983.
