It seems North Carolina could get trashed, becoming the nation's fourth-largest garbage importer if five proposed landfills are built in rural Eastern and Piedmont counties. The Eastern Carolina counties affected are Camden and Hyde.
The landfills would bring money to some of the state's poorest counties but they also could cause them concerns about contamination. North Carolina is an attractive site for garbage companies because, among other things, it doesn't have a surcharge on garbage, like many other states.
