Governor Mike Easley today surveyed tornado damage in Bertie County as teams looked at whether homeowners could be eligible for low interest loans to rebuild.
The governor took an aerial tour and then met privately with local and county officials. Easley says 47 homes in the Lewiston-Woodville area were damaged by the Sunday evening storm. Sixteen of those homes were destroyed, another three received major damage, while 28 sustained minor damage.
The governor says 13 of the 16 homes destroyed did not have insurance.
Easley says six people were injured when the EF-02 tornado ripped through the area around 6:30 p.m. Sunday. One of those, a high school senior, is still hospitalized at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
A shelter has been set up by the American Red Cross. Residents can go to the Mount Olive Baptist Church, 102 Mount Olive Road in Windsor for food, water, counseling and to find out more about applying for financial assistance.
WITN News will have more on the governor's visit tonight at 5 & 6 p.m.

Noone asks for their homes, their lives, everything they know to be ripped out from under them. Think about what life would be like for you (even with your insurance) if your home and all of your belongings were taken away. I was raised in Lewiston. My heart aches to see my hometown in the condition it is in this week. Maybe you should step down off your soapbox and realize that people in need need a helping hand, not harsh words. One day you may be in the same situation they are in and will need compassion not criticism to overcome your trials.
Home owners insurance will increase anyway do to the gas prices so deal with it. Put yourself in these peoples shoes if you cant afford it you cant get it. Besides your probably collecting a check every month for child support makes it easier dont it. i have homeowners insurance to and i pay mine to every month. To the people that lost everything you are in my prayers.
Some people make me so sick.Let me say this.I have worked hard for almost 60 years and never asked anyone for anything.GOD always made a way.Now N.C. and Washington steps in and raise GAS and FOOD prices,Take my tax money and give it to people who don't belong here or to people who won't work. They call it WELFARE.Now the people who have lived and worked here all their life, lose everything in a storm they did not ask for. You all want to cry about INS. Give me a break,,,,Help your fellow man out as I intent to do. My GOD people,,,wake up and care about someone beside yourself. Show a little LOVE for someone who need it.You raise taxes for everything else. Raise Home owers INS. I will pay mine.
