Lawmen say 42-year-old John Gardner of New York was swimming in the ocean near Corolla Monday afternoon when he was pulled out to sea. Another beachgoer tried to save him, but got into trouble and had to be rescued by lifeguards. Gardener was vacationing on the Outer Banks with his wife.
