Sunday morning many Carteret County residents put on their Sunday best and headed, not to church, but to the Morehead City waterfront.
Hundreds of people lined the state port in Morehead City Sunday morning for the 9th Annual Blessing of the Fleet. It's a tradition where a wreath is thrown in the water to remember those commercial fisherman who have passed away. 24 boats took part in the procession as their deceased loved ones names were read aloud to the crowd. It's a ceremony organizers say is needed to honor those who have helped and continue to help the local seafood economy thrive.
Organizers say the boat procession turnout wasn't as large as in years past because high fuel prices kept many boats docked, while others were out to sea working, trying to make up for lost ground following Hurricane Ophelia.
