Governor Mike Easley signed a school nutrition bill to that establishes statewide standards for school meals and aims to cut fats and sugar consumed by children. The bill calls for more fruits and vegetables and fewer sweets and fatty foods. Easley says the bill will encourage better health through dietary changes. The bill establishes pilot programs in eight middle schools and eight high schools. All elementary schools in the state are required to put the standards in place by the end of the 2007-2008 school year.
