Parole denied. One of Onslow County's most notorious convicted killers will remain behind bars for now.
Members of the North Carolina Parole Commission voted unanimously this week to deny Marcus Shrader parole. Shrader was charged with killing four Onslow County women in 1974, Cheryl Potter Boyd, Karen Amabile, Cindy Howard and Ginger Rader but was only taken to trial in one of the cases, that of Cheryl Potter Boyd. He was convicted and sentenced to death. That sentence was changed to life in prison after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the death penalty unconstitutional in 1976, making those with a life sentence eligible for parole. Shrader will be eligible for parole again on September 21, 2006.
