The Craven County Sheriff's Department has caught a man wanted in Maryland on charges that he stabbed a person following an argument, then beat him to death with a hammer. Fifty-year-old Melvin Earl Gaskins was arrested about 6:30 Wednesday morning, after being found sleeping inside a shed near Highway 17 at a family member's house. Authorities say the family did not appear to know that Gaskins was wanted by authorities when he came to visit. Gaskins is being held in the Craven County jail without bond. He will be extradited back to Maryland in the next few days.
