Local Port Picking Up More Business

Ports in our state and elsewhere continue to pick up the slack from the shutdown of ports in the storm-ravaged Gulf Coast. That means longshoremen at Morehead City in Carteret County have plenty of work this week. Their counterparts at Wilmington, Pensacola and Panama Beach, Florida, are just as busy. None of the four ports rank in the country's top 40 by tonnage, but are receiving cargo once headed for New Orleans or Pascagoula and Gulfport, Mississippi, before Katrina swept through.
