Jacksonville's long-awaited, harshly debated conference center may be dead. Just as the city started clearing this site for the multi-million dollar project in downtown Jacksonville, the city council voted 5-to-1 Wednesday night to break off negotiations with a development group for the proposed hotel and conference center. But, the Marine Museum of The Carolinas, which was also supposed to be located close to the center, says don't count out the project just yet. A new beginning, with a museum first, might still bring growth to the Jacksonville. The joint public-private venture, a hotel and conference center plus a Marine Museum, was projected to bring millions in new investments, as well as hundreds of new jobs and thousands of visitors to Jacksonville.
