The State Board of Elections has ordered every county to use voting machines with a paper trail for every vote cast. But one county in Eastern Carolina is concerned they may not have the money to purchase the new machines. Pamlico County currently has 38 voting machines which originally cost just over $100,000. County officials say the new machines should cost about the same and the state will pick up part of the bill. But the county says they will still have to come up with about $50,000 that is not currently budgeted for.
