North Carolina's crime rate continues to fall.

For the third straight year, the overall crime rate declined. This time, it fell 2.9 percent, and was led by drops in robbery and larceny. The overall rate has fallen eight of the past nine years.

Data collected by the State Bureau of Investigation says violent crime fell 1.7 percent, while property crime, which often increases during bad economic times, fell 3.1 percent.

Attorney General Roy Cooper says while the effort to make North
Carolina safe is paying off, he noted that the incidence of rape
increased 7.5 percent. He says that mirrors a trend across the South and which may be attributed to previous underreporting of sexual assault crimes.
